FLOAT is a series of temporary, site-specific artworks and
performances that will be installed, performed, and screened at various
locations in Long Island City's Socrates Sculpture Park.
In 2003 and 2005, this biennial series addressed the politics of public space,
mobility, relational aesthetics, and social sculpture. In its third installment,
FLOAT artists have been selected for their interest in what Frederic Jameson
has coined 'archeologies of the future,' or nostalgia for a future that is
either of the past or never happened.
New York-based Canadian artists Sheila Ross and Laura Ten Eyck have been
invited to install Yurt City II, an outdoor, collaborative tent and
yurt installation. Other artists have also been invited to add to, modify, or
respond to the tents. While tent cities and Gecekondu (stealth overnight
architectural squatter structures) serve as references for these large-scale
sculptures, the inclusion of surprise elements and other innovations by the
artists will provide a transformative experience for the audience.
